Underlying Emotions That Cause Anxiety
Anxiety can feel like a heavy weight on your shoulders, dragging you down and leaving you feeling helpless and uncertain. After supporting clients daily for the last 10 years, I have found there are two emotions that are always hiding out behind anxiety.
Powerlessness + Uncertainty
These emotions can be the driving force behind anxiety, creating a vicious cycle that can be difficult to break free from. But understanding the underlying emotions that trigger anxiety can be the first step in finding relief.
Uncertainty is like a dark cloud that hangs over your head, casting a shadow of doubt and fear. It can be triggered by a variety of situations, from uncertainty about the future to feeling unsure about yourself or your abilities. It's easy to get caught up in what could go wrong and all the ways you might fail. This uncertainty can lead to feelings of anxiety and overwhelm, leaving you feeling paralyzed and unable to move forward.
Powerlessness is another underlying emotion that can create anxiety. It's the feeling of being trapped, helpless, or without control. It can be triggered by situations where you feel like you don't have a say or can't make a difference. Maybe it's a difficult relationship, a toxic work environment, or a health issue that's out of your hands. Whatever the cause, the feeling of powerlessness can lead to anxiety and a sense of defeat.
But there is hope. By understanding these underlying emotions, you can take steps to overcome them and find relief from anxiety. Here are three solutions:
Focus on what you can control. While there may be things that are out of your control, there are likely many things that you do have control over. Focus on those things, and take action where you can. For example, if you're feeling uncertain about your job, focus on improving your skills or networking to expand your options. Taking even small steps can give you a sense of empowerment and help reduce anxiety.
Seek support. Feeling alone can exacerbate feelings of powerlessness and uncertainty. Reach out to friends, family, or a therapist for support and guidance. Talking through your feelings with someone you trust can help you gain perspective and find solutions. Surround yourself with a community of people who uplift and support you, and don't be afraid to ask for help.
Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is a powerful tool for managing anxiety. It involves being present in the moment, without judgment or attachment to thoughts or emotions. Try incorporating mindfulness practices into your daily routine, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises. These practices can help you become more aware of your thoughts and emotions, and help you stay grounded and present.
Remember, anxiety is a normal and natural response to certain situations. But by understanding the underlying emotions that trigger it, and by practicing strategies to overcome those emotions, you can release anxiety and live a more peaceful and fulfilling life. Don't be afraid to reach out for support and know that you have the power within you to overcome anxiety and find peace.
